01 A Foreshadowing Buried in a Sentence, Only Understood Two Years Later
In the spring of 2023, Robin Li said calmly at an internal meeting: "The biggest opportunity in the large model ecosystem is agents." At that time, people台下 were busy taking notes, but few really understood.
Two years later, the world is obsessed with Agent: Microsoft put Copilot into all Office, OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent is still in beta, Manus just raised $200 million and was snapped up. And Baidu has quietly turned agents into "water, electricity, and coal" — Wenxin Agent Platform has 300,000 enterprises, 1 million developers, Miaoda had 20,000 people flocking in on its launch day, GenFlow2.0 generates a research report with charts in minutes.
Only then did everyone realize: Robin Li wasn't predicting, he was spoiling. He wrote the endgame in the meeting minutes of 2023 in advance, then led Baidu to sprint all the way, advancing "Agent Year" to 2025.
02 Not Making Products, But Building Highways
Baidu's approach is "counter-intuitive": while others make hit apps, it builds infrastructure.
- Wenxin Agent Platform is like an "Agent Foxconn", with just a name and some data, you can mass-produce exclusive Agents;
- Miaoda simply cuts the development threshold to the floor, even product managers who can't write code can drag out an H5 with payment functionality in 3 minutes;
- GenFlow2.0 is even more amazing, generating PPT+report+poster in one sentence, and can be directly put into Baidu Netdisk for further modification, packaging the creation process at once.
But what's more震撼 is Baidu's "second battlefield" — autonomous driving.
- Technical route: In 2024, Baidu completed BEV+OCC+Transformer multi-task unified network upgrade, using 60 million kilometers of Robotaxi data, 17 billion parameter visual large model, completing the last piece of the puzzle for pure vision solutions.
- Cost revolution: The sixth-generation unmanned vehicle cut lidar, reducing the entire vehicle cost from 500,000 yuan to 200,000 yuan, then to 37,000 US dollars, 80% lower than the industry average.
- Global deployment: On July 15, Apollo Go announced a strategic cooperation with Uber, launching first in Asia and the Middle East by the end of this year, with thousands of unmanned vehicles directly accessing the Uber network. Users open the Uber App and can hail a "萝卜" without a steering wheel.
From models to roads, from code to wheels, Baidu has built "agent highways" to every city, every car, every trip.
03 When "Agent Density" Becomes the New Moat
At Baidu World 2024, Robin Li gave a number: there will be "millions of agents" in the future, as popular as websites in the PC era and self-media accounts in the mobile era.
Behind this sentence lies three layers of ambition:
- Define standards: When everyone is "naming and feeding data" on the Wenxin platform, Agent's interfaces, protocols, and business models are naturally decided by Baidu;
- Data siphon: The vertical scenario data brought by 300,000 enterprises will feed back to Wenxin large model like a snowball, getting smarter with use, and harder to leave the smarter it gets;
- Ecosystem lock: From entrance (search + XiaoDu) to tools (Miaoda +文库) to platform (Wenxin Agent), to wheels (Apollo Go + Uber), Baidu has enclosed developers, enterprises, users, and cities with a complete "Agent-to-Wheel" industrial chain.
More hidden is the patent wall. According to the "2025 Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Patent White Paper", Baidu ranks first in both agent and autonomous driving patent applications in China, covering almost all conceivable positions from multi-agent collaboration to pure visual perception algorithms.
While competitors are still struggling with "how to make a better Agent" or "how to reduce the price of a lidar", Baidu is already calculating "how many Agents and unmanned vehicles a city needs to operate 24 hours a day on its own". This dimensionality reduction attack from single-point technology to system ecosystem is Baidu's true unstoppable ambition.
Conclusion
20 years ago, Baidu defined "the connection between people and information" with a search box;
Today, it wants to define "the connection between people and the world" with agents, and "the connection between cities and the future" with unmanned vehicles.
In 2025, when millions of Agents run day and night in the cloud and thousands of unmanned vehicles shuttle silently on global streets, people will remember that underestimated sentence from the spring of 2023 —
"The biggest opportunity in the large model ecosystem is agents."
It turns out Robin Li wasn't placing a bet back then, he was flipping the chessboard.
